Hoa 'Āina O Mākaha 45th Anniversary Fundraiser - An Evening Under the Stars

We're celebrating 45 beautiful years of life, growth, and lots of aloha in our beloved community during our anniversary fundraiser happening on Saturday November 23, 2024! On our farm surrounded by the beauty and bounty of Mākaha, we will feature ʻono meaʻai made by Chef Ahu Hettema and Nili Yildirim of Istanbul Hawai‘i, Chef Michelle Karr-Ueoka of MW Restaurant, and Searider Culinary of Wai‘anae High School, entertainment by Uluwale, farm tours led by our keiki, and a country store with value-added products fresh from the farm. Guests are sure to enjoy a truly memorable evening as we honor our 45-year history, share memories, spend time together, and extend our gratitude. We hope you can join us in celebrating this tremendous milestone! Join Our Team at Hoa 'Āina O Mākaha!

We are looking for a Mahi’ai Educator to join our team at Hoa 'Āina O Mākaha! The Mahi‘ai Educator will work to develop and deliver thoughtful and meaningful educational activities and lessons for our program participants (keiki to kūpuna) in order to enhance cultural, ecological, and social health and well-being and strengthen community. This position works closely with our team to co-develop unique ʻāina-based lessons for the community and supports the overall farm operations. The Mahi‘ai Educator will provide engaging experiences through a cultural lens centered around HAOM values and mālama ʻāina. For the full Position Description, please click on this link - Mahi‘ai Educator. Nā Keiki Mahi'ai Summer Program 2024

Who: Incoming 2nd-6th graders (current 6-12 years old) from Mākaha (open to other Wai‘anae moku keiki if spaces are available)

What: Nā Keiki Mahi‘ai Summer Program 2024

Program Dates: June 3 - June 26, 2024 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays

Time: 8:00am-12:00pm 

Location: Hoa ʻĀina O Mākaha + other sites as planned 

Students will engage in hands-on exploration projects on the farm and gain a deeper understanding of sustainability and mahi‘ai practices while forming a meaningful connection to ‘āina and each other. This is a program of Hoa ʻĀina O Mākaha with generous funding provided by the Kamehameha Schools Kaiāulu Program. With this funding, there will be NO COST for your child to participate, but we do expect a full commitment to this program as space is limited. This program is currently full.

If so, join us at our next Kūpuna U-Pick event where students from Papahana ‘O Kaiona will lead activities on the farm including harvesting, sugarcane juice refresher, recipe sharing, and value-added products. Kūpuna 55 years+ are welcome to connect, learn, and enjoy this time with youth from Wai‘anae and the HAOM staff. Bring your mo‘opuna! This event is free and open to all kūpuna in our community.

Join us for a special U-Pick event in collaboration with Mālama Learning Center (MLC). In addition to getting to harvest your own vegetables and fruits from the farm, MLC staff will share about trees and their many benefits, lead tree planting demonstrations, and will giveaway trees for 'ohana who come from West O'ahu (one tree per 'ohana). Tree planting demonstrations and giveaway will be from 9:00am-11:00am . *Must attend a tree planting demo to receive a free tree.

Māna ‘Ai Carving Workshop with Nalu Andrade

We're excited to host a two-day Māna 'Ai (baby's first food dish) carving workshop on April 20 and April 21 in partnership with Hawaiian carving practitioner Nalu Andrade and Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program. Nalu Andrade will share about the values and functions of trees and forests, plus how to access wood and transform it into meaningful and usable art. ‘Ohana will get to carve a māna ʻai (baby’s first food dish) from recovered wood and support restoration of our forests while practicing forest stewardship. There is no cost to participants, Kaulunani covers all of the fees and Nalu will provide the supplies and tools for carving. This workshop is two days and we're asking for a commitment to both days of the workshop to promote reciprocity and pilina building between us and this 'āina. We can accommodate 10 ‘ohana (up to 5 people per ‘ohana) and is first come, first serve. This workshop is currently full, but we will have a waitlist in case any spaces open up.
